Bare Bones (2022)

A fine art performance dealing with Irish societies hidden past, commissioned by Kilkenny Arts Festival at Kilkenny Castle.

Bare Bones was a performance dealing with Irish society’s hidden past. I was commissioned to do a performance by Kilkenny Arts Festival, and taking note of the overall programmes concept of women in power, this piece was made in response to Kilkenny Castle as a site. I chose the Medieval Room as it was where the servants worked and this site had the most raw quality, deep in the bowels of the castle. I had in mind the Tuam babies and the bravery of Catherine Corless who exposed these hidden lives, hidden deaths. I wanted to bring focus in this site to our own power to hide and distort our history. The mediums used were tracing paper, charcoal and dried tree branches from the lake near my home in Blessington. I had previously worked with the branches as a medium in No Bones About It… (2016) in Kilmainham Gaol as I find that they resemble human bones. Bare Bones noted the lives of the dead and their eternal presence.
